consume4Why I’m Not Buying Clothes [for myself] for the Entire YEAR

Mom said “you… what?” My sister laughed and a friend asked a horrified “whyyyy??!”

It sounds crazy. I know. Just read.

Firstly, I have a lot of clothes. A. Lot. I’ve been told so and I believe it. In my last apartment, I had two-count em!- TWO decent sized walk-in closets that were pretty much full. Sure, I had my art supplies and some cleaning stuff, but it was 90-92% clothing! In retrospect, that sounds ludicrous for one human.

Then when I moved, it felt like I was stuck packing clothes for forever!

The madness had to end and made a vow to not make not ONE clothing purchase for myself in 2015.

So far, so good.

The other “deeper” reason why is my distaste for consumerism

/kənˈsjuːməˌrɪzəm
noun

advocacy of a high rate of consumption and spending as a basis for a sound economy

Trust me, I’m not one that is into name brands or maxing out credit cards to have the latest trend. Not I. Never have been. But I realized I had a problem: thinking I needed new stuff. And getting it made me feel good. Boosted my mood. I think it’s fair to evolve your wardrobe and buy things that make you look and feel great; I was just doing it far too often.

Plus I just want to be a better woman and support small, local, and Black-owned companies when I can. I want to get better at making the best of what I have.

So, luckily, it has been much easier than I thought it would be. I’ve opted to “shop” my own closet instead of buying what I want just because it’s cute. It has only been a couple months [cuz I did buy myself some goodies on “Black Friday” after Christmas], but I am super proud of myself.

This is a resolution that I definitely plan to keep up with. Who knows, it may even trickle into 2016. I do need some new jeans tho…
