All Wrapped Up, Holiday Sweater Style

During this last week of November, I’ve been suggesting ways to show your holiday spirit this season. You can be chic with sparkle or sophisticated in your toned down greens and reds, but the holiday sweater is in a class of its own. But, unlike the other trends, you can’t take these styles beyond the season and it can be difficult to make them look pretty. But I don’t think looking pretty is the goal in donning a holiday-themed sweater.

They’re spirited and fun and corny and can definitely break the ice as conversation starters.

So whether you’re headed to a cabin in the mountains, an ugly sweater party or a family gathering, a holiday sweater is an easy go-to. They’re casual so they can be dressed up with a circle skirt and some riding boots or jeans with flats or even pumps!

I found a few cuties worth buying:

Holiday Cheer: How to Rock Red+Green

I love red. And I love green. But paired up, it’s difficult to avoid looking like an Irish maid or one of Santa’s helpers. So I have a few tips for looking festive instead of in costume when rocking your reds and greens this holiday season:

Try wearing a tint of green with a tone of red-like this lime green dress with rust-colored accessories. [And the less pieces, the better, to avoid looking matchy-matchy.] You’ll look adorable at the next holiday potluck!

Or you can stick with primary red combined with a toned down green-like olive. They make a sophisticated team and will make a statement at the in-laws’ dinner table.

And of course you can never go wrong with primary red. Match it with some emerald green bling and you’ll say holiday without looking like an elf.

Another go is rocking around the Christmas tree in a blouse or dress with celebratory greens and reds in the print. Coordinate it with a toned sweater or blazer and neutral shoes and accessories[try metallic bronze or gold for extra spirit] and you’ll have the perfect party get-up!

Holiday Sparkle

It’s the most wonderful time of the year!! What better way to show your holiday spirit than rocking a shimmery frock that resembles the twinkle of the lights across the city? Sequins add that touch or overall spark that, paired with a confident smile, can light up a room.

Sweat Her Dress

How lucky are women? Well, in general, we put up with a loooooot-our bodies withstand a lot of stress and “changes,” and we get the short end in a number of situations. But, on the bright, fashionable side, we are the only ones that can put on one piece of clothing, add some kicks and have a complete look. That one piece of clothing? A dress. It’s made just for women and defines femininity. And in the cold months, the sweater dress replaces the sundress, providing warmth and a touch of sophistication.

Forever 21 “Essential Cable Knit Sweater Dress $28

Easily paired with some booties and a clutch, a sweater dress can be a great comfortable look for a day of work, school, or play.

Gap “Striped Merino Sweater Dress” $55

H&M Dress $35

Instead of layering up your sweater and teaming it up with jeans, try the onion effect with a sweater dress. It can be tricky and add unsightly bulk, though, if the hemlines don’t match up. But if done correctly, it can be pretty sharp. A belt can always be added to help camouflage.

BB Dakota “Marilou Sweater Dress” $69

French Connection “Bambi Striped Sweater Dress” $119

In stripes or a chunky cable knit, sweater dresses are the sexy, ladies only version of the ultimate winter staple. It truly can go anywhere any other casual dress can go-including a date, dinner party or business meeting[dependent on the length, of course]. And it is the captain of a winning team when combined with boots and tights, a scarf and maybe a belt. It compliments all body types-even makes perfect maternity wear. Added bonus: the sweater dress doesn’t compromise on comfort.
